Using mapred.max.split.size to increase number of mappers

Hi,
  In old API FileInputFormat (org.apache.hadoop.mapred.FileInputFormat)
 code  "mapred.max.split.size" parameter is not used. Is any other way we
change the number of mappers in old API?
