I don't think OpenJDK is supported. There were a lot of problems with it.

But feel free to give it a try,  if you run into JVM crashes. Use Oracle(Sun) JDK 6. (NOT 7)
Harsh had a good post before regarding the JVM(s).

I think you should set  JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/jvm/java-7-**openjdk-i386/jre

JAVA_HOME is the base location of java, where it can find the java executable $JAVA_HOME/bin/java
