HI all,
 Looks like we got rid of the edit link on jira. I think it was quite useful
for minor spelling mistake changes like

IF instead of IS..... (now I have to repost the whole comment making
spelling  changes all over the comment)

I am sure there must have been a valid reason for removing it but would it
be possible to reinstate it and use it for editing comments for minor
spelling  changes (some ethics law)?

Comments on JIRA get sent out by email (and it is the email that we
actually read), we shouldn't let people go back and edit comments in the
same sense that it is not possible to go back and change an email once
it is sent (editing comments also leads to many emails sent out further
clogging our inboxes).

Before we submit a comment, we should read it twice and correct the
typos, then post it.

As I understand it until recently we were able to edit comments, for
some reason it was changed. People found editing comments useful in
certain circumstances.

1) has editing of comments been a problem for the hadoop community --
were people misusing this?

2) email IS sent on every JIRA comment, including edits to comments. The
community can therefore review any edit, if there's an issue (misuse) it
can be rectified.

Given 1 & 2 I don't see why we should make a change to disallow comment
editing at this time.

For folks who follow issues by email, a small change requires that one
re-read the entire edited comment, since Jira's diffs are useless.
Folks were frequently editing long comments making it very difficult to
determine what change had been made.  It's better to make a new comment
amending one's prior comment.

I have long argued against editing Jira comments.

Perhaps I misunderstood the scope of this discussion - is it general
Hadoop or specific to some subset of Hadoop projects? Regardless, at
this time the ZooKeeper community would prefer to continue supporting
edits on comments.

All Hadoop sub-projects currently share a single Jira permission scheme.

Jira permission schemes are only alterable by Jira-wide administrators I
think, and each TLP has only a few of those.  Owen & I are I believe the
only Jira-wide admins for the Hadoop TLP.  So it might be impractical to
use a custom permission scheme per subproject.

If the ZooKeeper community wishes, I suppose we might switch ZooKeeper's
Jira to the Apache standard permission scheme, which does permit comment
editing.
