Out of curiosity, what is the history with why Pig is called "Pig" ?

Because pigs eat anything. Among other reasons that the true pigsters can
clarify best. On Fri, Apr 3, 2009 at 4:30 PM, Suhail Doshi <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Out of curiosity, what is the history with why Pig is called "Pig" ? > > Suhail > > -- > http://mixpanel.com > Blog: http://blog.mixpanel.com > -- Ted Dunning, CTO DeepDyve

You mean it doesn't stand for "Parallelized Infrastructure and
Grammar for Learning and Aggregation of Tuples in Integrated Networks"? -D On Fri, Apr 3, 2009 at 9:57 PM, Ted Dunning <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Because pigs eat anything. Hmmm, that's a retronym that I had not heard of.

Re: Why "Pig"Chris Olston 2009-04-05, 15:59
For a while it was "the system" and "the language". When we had to check it
into CVS we had to come up with a name. Pig was the first thing that came out of my mouth. It stuck. A few weeks later Andrew's wife coined Pig Latin for the language to go along with Pig. It's not an acronym, and should not appear in all-caps as I keep seeing :) -Chris On 4/3/09 7:27 PM, "Santhosh Srinivasan" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Hmmm, that's a retronym that I had not heard of. > > Santhosh > > -----Original Message----- > From: Dmitriy Ryaboy [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] > Sent: Friday, April 03, 2009 7:24 PM > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Subject: Re: Why "Pig" > > You mean it doesn't stand for "Parallelized Infrastructure and > Grammar for Learning and Aggregation of Tuples in Integrated > Networks"? > > -D > > On Fri, Apr 3, 2009 at 9:57 PM, Ted Dunning <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: >> Because pigs eat anything. "Parallelized Infrastructure and Grammar" for Hadoop suits Pig. We can
adopt it I think. --nitesh On Sun, Apr 5, 2009 at 9:29 PM, Chris Olston <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > For a while it was "the system" and "the language". No offence, but:
Ug. Why does everything have to be an acronym? In the early days, for those that insisted on an acronym I gave the following recursive and self referential meaning: Pig Is Not an Acronym.
