[VOTE] Powered by LogoOwen O'Malley 2011-06-15, 03:19
All,
We've had a wide range of entries for a powered by logo. I've put them all on a page, here: http://people.apache.org/~omalley/hadoop-powered-by/ Since there are a lot of contenders and we only want a single round of voting, let's use single transferable vote ( STV http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Single_transferable_vote). The important thing is to pick the images *IN ORDER* that you would like them. My vote (in order of course): 4, 1, 2, 3, 5, 6. In other words, I want option 4 most and option 6 least. With STV, you don't need to worry about voting for an unpopular choice since your vote will automatically roll over to your next choice. -- Owen

My vote: 5 1 6 2 3 4
tl;dr regarding STV - since we're only selecting one winner, STV reduces to instant-runoff voting. -- Aaron T. When casting your vote, please keep in mind that the vast majority of the
time the "Powered By" logo will be displayed in a size much smaller than what is displayed on Owen's link. Here's a similar page which shows all the logos at a few different sizes: http://people.apache.org/~atm/hadoop-powered-by/ (This is the reason I prefer choice #5 to all others. I believe it'll be more visually distinct from the project logo at small sizes, which was the point of developing a "Powered By" logo in the first place.) -- Aaron T. Yes. That isn't enough votes, but I think that the other logos don't cut the mustard for various reasons. 5 is a recycled product logo and I don't think the others make the required visual case. I only like 4. A more polished version would be great. Maybe with
"Hadoop" instead of "Apache Hadoop". It should look something like this:

It's not macho, it's the power coming from Hadoop.
The feather would classy on that background too. Just got a few minutes to look at these. I must say that I'm very
disappointed. Some of the choices are nice clip art but none of them are appropriate for powered-by logos at typical logo size: <=64 pixels in height, where they are completely illegible. I present choice 0, which IMHO is a better candidate than the rest of the choices: https://issues.apache.org/jira/secure/attachment/12483197/pbh-64-logos.png Please find the larger version on https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HADOOP-7020 __Luke On Tue, Jun 14, 2011 at 8:19 PM, Owen O'Malley <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > All, > We've had a wide range of entries for a powered by logo. Keep in mind that it is thematic elements, not specific implementation that
is being judged here. Many of these suggestions can be adapted to different font sizes depending on the desired final rendition size. Agreed. My suggestion is essentially thematic as well, as the Apache
theme is mostly missing from the rest of the entries. My suggestion emphasizes more on Apache and Hadoop rather than the proverbial elephant. Re: [VOTE] Powered by LogoTed Dunning 2011-06-20, 21:12
But keep in mind that creating new logos forever will tend to prevent
consensus being formed. That will result in the same result as no decision at all (i.e. everybody will just use their own). Owen already asked for votes on the original 6. The only substantive difference in the new logo is the addition of the feature (and the esthetic/political sub-text issue of putting the feather in the elephants nose). Font size can and will be adjusted. That adjustment will be done by our art team in MapR if the circle logo concept is the accepted consensus. My own view here is that consensus is at least as important as the precise content. Adding new options tends to value small details in content over consensus. I would prefer to not muddy the issue further. Elephant's nose is a versatile hand. What political sub-text are you talking about? I see no problem with an elephant upholding an apache feather. OTOH, feather in hand/nose is not the most substantive element rather than playful variation. The key element is the theme of apache and hadoop bigger than the proverbial elephant. > Font size can and will be adjusted. Since you eluded aesthetic and political sub-text, the MapR circle is problematic as well, which IMO looks like a plastic button or a deformed mouse wheel confining the elephant. > My own view here is that consensus is at least as important as the precise > content. ?
Are you talking about color palette choices? We use a pretty ordinary corporate blue based palette which inevitably makes gray tones important. Or the fact that we put circular borders around badge-like design element like this: http://mapr.com/images/products/dependable/btn_ha.png ? I don't think that we have any isolated rings such as the proposed logo on mapr.com at this time. We would like to (i.e. if this logo gets approved). How would you suggest adjusting the circle?
