[VOTE] Retire the Chukwa podling
Alan Cabrera 2012-11-20, 15:28
All,
The current thinking among the PPMC is that it's time to retire the Chukwa podling. Eric is working on getting the Subversion history ported to a new home on GitHub.
Please cast your vote:
[ ] +1 to retire the Chukwa project [ ] 0 for Don't care [ ] -1 for No, please keep it alive (please provide arguments why) Regards, Alan

My vote is 0 -- abstain. I would be happy to leave the project in incubation longer in case something turns up, but I'm not paying the administrative costs, so I don't feel able to vote -1.

Chukwa has several good design discussions and new features being committed in the past 6 month. e.g. New feature to add compression feature between agent and collector. Proposal for adding ability to support Ganglia Web as frontend. Validation and verification of JSP compilation. One of the long outstanding demux partition algorithm also has been refined. There are proposal being made and discussed. I think it is important that mentor recognize those contributions.
There is no paid developer in developing Chukwa. Therefore, the activities may be less than some of the paid developers working on project that get shipped as a commercial product. However, I think this community should not be judged by a single metric of how many patches were open/closed in the past 30 days. I like to continue to contribute to Chukwa at project's own pace. I am committed to long term support to this project.
regards, Eric

Sorry, but there's been no evidence that this project is progressing over the last three years. I was hesitant to cast this vote, but reviewing activity makes it pretty obvious.

I share Eric's feelings. Maybe Chukwa is not a hyped up project compared to other ETL/Hadoop projects. Nonetheless, it does its job and does it well. In my current company it represents an important piece of our Hadoop solutions. We plan to use it more in the next months (years?) and we have different ideas of changes we would like to bring to the community in the next weeks. So I would definitely enjoy if Chukwa could stay in incubation longer.

The number of contributions in Chukwa is not high but it isn't abandoned by the community. I use Chukwa as part of my ETL on Hadoop and, back in the day, I made a small contribution in the past to satisfy one of my needs and I plan to keep doing it.
Chukwa is a project that does its job efficiently. To retire the Chukwa podling is the closest to kill it, I'm surprised that the Apache Foundation does not want to support useful and proven projects.

Ugh, I'm starting to feel like Dan Devine in the movie Rudy…
