Pig 0.5 do not support hadoop 0.18.3 ?
Jeff Zhang 2009-11-02, 05:57
Hi all,
Today I try pig 0.5, but it can not connect to hdfs 0.18.3. From the release announcement, it seems pig 0.5 already support hadoop 0.20. But does it means it do not support 0.18.3 any more ? Jeff Zhang

Correct. Pig does not provide backwards compatibility across major Hadoop versions.
There is a patch that allows 0.4 to compile against both 18 and 20 (pig-933 I think), but the decision was made not to integrate it as it would not be possible to keep this backwards compatibility once we went to the new Hadoop API in 0.6.
That patch is in the Cloudera package, though, so the cloudera deb works with both 18 and 20.
Other than the hadoop version change 0.5 is not much different from 0.4 -- some bug fixes perhaps.

A particular version of Pig works with a particular version of Hadoop. In this case, Pig 0.5.0 works with Hadoop 0.20.x. Pig 0.4.0 works with Hadoop 0.18.x and has all the features of Pig 0.5.0
