On my mac, /var has these perms:

drwxr-xr-x  24 root  wheel  816 Dec  9 15:46 /var/

Is that same as yours?

When I try to use your configs., my failure is different but the expected:

java.io.IOException: Unable to create data directory
/var/zookeeper/zookeeper_0/version-2

The refguide does not tell you use /var, right?

You might as well paste the full .log and .out here.
