Hi,

I looked around, but couldn't find any discussions about Zookeeper on EC2
micro instances.... ever been tried before? suicidal?

Please note that micro instance has very bad CPU pattern - as soon as you
go through some limit in CPU usage, it starts to crawl, literally. It's
something like 98% of stolen CPU time (don't remember exact values). For me
it made things only worse - any reasonable load made server unresponsive.
This was small PHP server, thought, may be Zookeeper will survive, but you
must test it beforehand.

Never tried but based on what I've seen of ZK I'd imagine it would work fine for simple instances where ZK is used for multi-server barriers.  It's performance seems pretty consistent with the throughput demanded of it.

I have tried it on small instances (a few years ago) and it didn't work
well.  I attributed the problems at the time to the fact that the small
instances could check out for significant periods of time, causing havoc if
you have short timeouts.

It would be worth a try again since I think that the virtualization layer
at EC2 has progressed mightily over the intervening time.
