Are you also using CassandraStorage?
Can you paste the entire stack trace  ?
It seems CassandraStorage is returning a DataByteArray instead of String, can you try declaring the schema with the column type as bytearray, and then do a cast ?

A few questions:
What are you trying to do?  What is the pig script that you're trying to run?
What version of Cassandra?
What version of Pig?
Did you add any column_metadata to your column family, like a validation_class?
