Is there a way to configure the default timeout of a datanode? Currently its
set to 630seconds and I want something a bit more realistic -- like 30
seconds.

The heartbeat.recheck.interval is the basis for this change - it's default
is set to 5 min.
It is used to compute heartbeatExpireInterval which is equal to 2 * recheck
interval + 10 * heartbeat interval (3sec) ... or the 630s you are seeing.

Word of warning - setting too low of a timeout may create lots of extra
network traffic (ie: replication storm).
