If you want to stay with the SQL syntax, give Phoenix (
http://phoenix.incubator.apache.org) - its a light 'skin' on HBase that
supports most sql syntax. Its got views, predicate push down, secondary
indexes and some join support.

I'm a little biased as im a phoenix committer :)
