Thanks Shekhar,

The problem was not in my building of the jar.  It was in fact in execution

I was running command

*hadoop -jar* <jar filename> <qualified class name> input output

The problem was with -jar.  It should be

*hadoop jar* <jar filename> <qualified class name> input output
