I think we should reserve single quotes, double quotes, tilde, and
backslash in addition to the parenthesis, ampersand and pipe that are
already used. If we need more special characters in the future we have the
option of using backslash to change their meaning. For example, we could
later decide that \^ means "exclusive or", while ^ is the literal carat
character. See for example vim's search and replace syntax:
